2013 Financial Aid U Training Institute Request for Applications
In conjunction with the Citi Foundation, NCTC created the Financial Aid U (FAU) Training Institute to educate and train new, selected organizations to implement FAFSA preparation services in their communities. This past tax season NCTC trained seven new programs to launch FAU in their communities so they could assist students in gaining access to federal student aid for postsecondary education.
To date FAU has served over 8,000 students. Research shows college attendance rates for low-income students lag 20-40 percent behind higher-income students. Many low-income students are not aware that financial aid is available, and those who do are often discouraged by the high cost of attending college – and it’s only going up! Over the past three years, the college enrollment rate of students that received service from FAU is 50 percent, and those students were awarded approximately $38 million in federal and state aid.
The FAU Training Institute is a blended learning opportunity – NCTC will use training technologies and the experience and knowledge of successful partners and financial aid professionals to train programs. The first portion of the Training Institute will be a six-week required online course in July and August 2013, followed by the one-day in-person Institute session at March Forward, NCTC’s National Conference in September 2013.
Following the Institute all participants will continue to receive access to technical assistance support, access to learning circles, peer mentoring, and additional training support from NCTC.
We invite new programs across the country to join in this opportunity to help students build their path to postsecondary education. To learn more about the Training Institute and how to apply to be part of the program, visit the FAU Training Institute webpage.
