One of the most important aspects of running a VITA program is data collection. From telling your funders about your successes this past tax season or figuring out where to improve operations, data collection helps your program grow for the future.
As members of the Data Collection Working Group at NCTC, we would like to help the rest of the field with their data collection problems by setting up a running series of articles on NCTC’s WorkForward blog that specifically addresses solving data collection needs.
We will talk about data collection topics ranging from reporting requirements for the VITA Grant and how to get the data you need, data collection methods from both TaxWise Desktop and TaxWise Online, best practices on how to get “clean” information, and much more during the tax season. According to this year’s data, NCTC members’ tax preparation sites have seen an amazing 350% increase in yearly returns filed since NCTC was founded ten years ago. The community VITA field prepared 1,618,332 federal returns this last tax season, with total refunds to clients exceeding $2 billion.
This data, collected through NCTC’s annual National Program Survey, is truly inspiring and reflects the ability of our members to overcome significant challenges.
