NCTC recently received confirmation from IRS SPEC leadership that the 16 VITA programs currently participating in the Schedule C Initiative will once again be permitted to assist clients with Schedule C tax return filings during the 2014 filing season. This is a reversal of a previous decision earlier this year, and we wholeheartedly thank IRS SPEC and Wage and Investment leadership for their reconsideration and recognition of the importance of this initiative for our clients. A new questions-and-answers document can help resolve some of the confusion that many VITA programs are understandably encountering regarding delays in volunteer -training materials and products for the 2013 tax-filing season.
The IRS SPEC office (Stakeholder Partnerships, Education, and Communications) announced the delays in mid-October, as programs were preparing for a new tax season and volunteer training and certification. As members of NCTC know, NCTC staff meets with the IRS SPEC team quarterly to discuss challenges and opportunities for the community tax preparation and asset building field. The first of these meetings for 2012 will be held at the NCTC office on February 1.

NCTC members had a record-breaking day of action in Washington, DC on October 13, 2011. Organizations from 18 states had meetings with over 60 congressional offices to ask support for the VITA Act of 2011 and to preserve refundable tax credits. We also hosted a congressional briefing with the Congressman Mike Honda, the lead sponsor of H.R. 2151, the VITA Act of 2011. We hope to grow our days of action to become bigger and better every year.
Organizations came from Arizona to Connecticut to meet with their Senators and Congressman. Local organizations were able to put a real face on the impact of the services they provide to their local communities. Make no mistake, VITA is VITAL for working families and that message was made loud and clear on Capitol Hill. Read the rest of this entry
